Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gary Kurt
Goaltender Gary Kurt used his 6'3" frame and long reach to foil many shooters in junior, the minors and the World Hockey Association. His NHL tenure might have lasted longer than16 games had he not suited up for the dreadful California Golden Seals in 1971-72.

A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Kurt starred for the hometown Rangers of the OHA from 1963 to 1967. He was the property of the New York Rangers and began his pro career by tending goal for the CHL's Omaha Knights. He next moved on to the Cleveland Barons and Baltimore Clippers of the AHL. Kurt's finest season came in 1970-71 when he recorded three shutouts for the Barons and led the league with a sparkling 2.67 goals-against average.

On June 7, 1971, the Seals claimed Kurt in the Intra-League Draft and suited him up for 16 games in 1971-72. He fought gamely and often kept his weak team in the game, but in the end he finished with a 1-7-5 mark. During that season Kurt was chosen by the New York Raiders in the WHA General Player Draft. He played 56 games for the New York/New Jersey franchise then became the first string netminder of the WHA's Phoenix Roadrunners from 1974 to 1977 before retiring.
