Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bill McKenzie
Bill McKenzie was a journeyman goalie who made 91 appearances in the 70s. He was chiefly an NHL backup but attained much success in the minors. His big league numbers would have looked better had he not constantly played behind weak defences.

Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, McKenzie was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings after a fine three-year career at Ohio State. During his rookie pro season, he made 45 appearances for the IHL's Port Huron Wings and was named to the league's first all-star team. In 1973-74, the young backstopper recorded a shutout and a 4-4-4 record but the Wings opted to give Roy Edwards, and then Jim Rutherford, the bulk of the playing time. After splitting the 1974-75 season between the Wings' backup role and the AHL's Virginia Wings, McKenzie was traded to the Kansas City Scouts.

McKenzie did what he could for the woeful Scouts but was often abandoned by his defence and posted a dismal 1-16-1 record and a 5.20 goals against average. He remained with the franchise when it relocated to Denver as the Colorado Rockies in 1976-77. That year, he spent most of his time in the minors and led the Kansas City Blues to the CHL crown. He looked solid while playing 12 games for the club in 1977-78 but spent the next season in the minors when Colorado went with Doug Favell and Michel Plasse in goal. Mckenzie retired in 1980 but went out on a positive note by registering a shutout and posting a 9-12-3 record for the Rockies in 26 appearances.
