Ivan Mitchell played his junior and senior hockey in Toronto before joining the USAHA's New York Wanderers in 1917-18. After only one season in New York, the netminder rejoined the Toronto senior based team for the 1918-19 season and was subsequently signed as a free agent by the Toronto St. Patsin the early stages of the 1918-19 season.

After playing three seasons with the St. Pats, Mitchell signed as a free agent with Hamilton early into the 1921-22 season. Upon arriving in Hamilton, Mitchell would miss the remainder of the season recovering from eventul career-ending illness that required treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Baltimore, Maryland.
