Goalie Joe Schaefer played a couple of games for the New York Rangers as an emergency replacement in the early 60s. He was a minor pro journeyman who ended up as an assistant trainer and practice netminder in the NHL.

Born on Long Island, New York, Schaefer played a few games in the EHL and AHL before landing a job on the New York Rangers' training staff. On February 17, 1960 he was pressed into service to replace injured Gump Worsley in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Black Hawks. On March 8, 1961 he had to face the Hawks again in a 4-3 loss after Worsley was again felled by an injury.
