Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gary Simmons
Gary "The Cobra" Simmons was born in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on July 19th, 1944 and paid his dues playing Senior hockey in Newfoundland and Alberta while also making minor pro stops in the International, Western and Central Hockey Leagues. One of his minor pro stops came in Phoenix and when that city was granted an expansion World Hockey Association franchise, Simmons rights were transferred to the new club. Phoenix then traded Simmons to the California Golden Seals of the NHL paving the way for Simmons big league debut in 1974.

Simmons assumed a large workload for a rookie goaltender playing 34 games for the Seals. The following year Simmons upped his totals platooning with Gilles Meloche while leading the club in wins with 15. The California franchise relocated to Cleveland in 1976, but Simmons played just 15 games for the Barons before he was dealt to the Los Angeles Kings in a four-player trade on January 22nd 1977.

With the Kings Simmons did not see nearly as much ice time with incumbent Rogatien Vachon playing the vast majority of the games. Simmons served as Vachon's backup the following season as well, but after recording just three victories in 18 games with the Kings he found himself back in the minors in 1978.

Simmons played just five games with the American Hockey League's Springfield Indians during the 1978-79 campaign before retiring from the game.
