Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ed Staniowski
Netminder Ed Staniowski played over 200 NHL games for three different NHL clubs in the 70s and 80s. He was generally used as a back up but did see time as a first stringer in junior and with the Winnipeg Jets.

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Staniowski led the Regina Pats to the 1974 Memorial Cup and was named to the WCJHL first all-star team and voted the Canadian Major Junior player of the year. He was chosen 27th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 1975 after playing 65 games for the Pats and representing Canada at the World Junior Championships.

Over the next six years Staniowski showed flashes of brilliance but was chiefly a solid back up on an inconsistent defensive team in St. Louis. He also spent time in the minors and shared the Terry Sawchuk trophy with Doug Grant in 1978 for allowing the fewest goals in the CHL.

In July, 1981 Staniowski was sent to the Jets along with Paul MacLean. He won 20 games and helped Winnipeg reach the playoffs but he started battling injuries and consistency. He was traded to the Hartford Whalers in 1983 for fellow back up Mike Veisor and retired in 1985.
