Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Greg Stefan
Greg Stefan grew up in Brantford, Ontario playing hockey on the same team as a fellow named Gretzky. The two were on the baseball team together in the summer, and traveled to hockey tournaments in the winter. One time, in Quebec, Gretzky got tired of signing autographs and gave his teammate Stefan his jacket and let him sign "Wayne Gretzky" for a while. All the people saw was a young boy with blond hair and a jacket that said Gretzky on it.

After Stefan left Brantford to play for the Oshawa Generals, he was selected by the Red Wings in the 1981 Entry Draft and moved up to the team's AHL affiliate in Adirondack for the 1981-82 season. That same year, Stefan made his debut in the NHL, playing in a couple of games for Detroit. He moved up to the NHL for good in the 1982-83 season and spent the next seven seasons there.

Stefan and the Wings made a run for the Cup in 1987, advancing to the Conference finals only to meet up with Stefan's boyhood friend, the Great One. The Oilers dispatched Detroit in five games on their way to the championship. It would be déjà vu all over again the next year when Edmonton repeated as Conference champions, again at the Wings' expense. Stefan finished his NHL career in the 1989-90 season and played in Adirondack for the next year before hanging up his pads for good.
