Goalie Phil Stein played one game for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1939-40. Although his NHL career was short he was a workhorse as an amateur and in the minors.
The Toronto native played junior with the hometown Marlboros of the OHA then spent several years with the Syracuse Stars of the IAHL/AHL. In 1937 and 1938 he led the AHL in appearances and minutes played. On January 18, 1940 Stein replaced an injured Turk Broda for the Maple Leafs and backstopped the club to a 2-2 tie with the New York Americans. After two years with the New Haven Eagles, Stein played eight games for the senior Toronto Research Colonels in 1942-43 before retiring.
