Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bernie Wolfe
Bernie Wolfe was born December 120, 1951 in Montreal, Quebec. A QUAA (Quebec University Athletic Association) First Team All-Star goaltender in 1972 and 1974, and a CIAU First Team All-Star in 1974 with the Sir George Williams University, he joined the Maine Nordiques of the North American Hockey League for the 1974-75 season.

A free agent signing with the Washington Capitals in October of 1974, Wolfe spent the majority of the 1974-75 season as a member of the Maine Nordiques, while also playing in 17 games with the Richmond Robins of the AHL.

Wolfe made his NHL debut with the Capitals during the 1975-76 season. While playing in 40 games with Caps, he set a club record for seasonal goals against average (4.16) and consecutive scoreless minutes (80:43). The team's most valuable player voted by the Capitals fans during his rookie season, Wolfe also played a handful of games with Richmond.

A viral infection at the beginning of the 1976-77 season hampered Wolfe's play and once it was cleared up he returned to the form that made him a favourite with the fans. Even with his slow start, Wolfe managed to improve on his totals from his rookie year, registering seven wins and a 3.84 goals against average.

The 1977-78 season saw Bernie Wolfe's playing time diminish, and he even played a handful of games with the Hershey Bears of the AHL. Although he played in 25 games, Capitals rookie netminder Jim Bedard played in 43 of the last 58 games of the season.

Bernie Wolfe's final season with the Capitals came in 1978-79 and his last season in the NHL saw him play in only 18 games. In 120 career games with the Capitals, Bernie Wolfe recorded 20 wins, 61 losses, and a 4.17 goals against average.
