Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Johan Holmqvist
Johan Holmqvist was born May 24, 1978 in Tolfta, Sweden. The seventh round, 175th overall selection of the New York Rangers in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Holmqvist played fours seasons in the Swedish Elite League before making his North American debut in 2000-01.

A member of Sweden's World Junior team (1998)and a two-time member of its National Team (1999-2000), Holmqvist led Brynas to the 1998-99 Swedish Elite League championship before making his NHL debut with the Rangers during the 2000-01 season. Holmqvist played two games with the Rangers in 2000-01, spending the better part of the year with the team's AHL affiliate in Hartford.

Over the course of the next two years, the swedish netminder saw most of his action in the AHL with Hartford and would play one game with the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers before joining the AHL's Houston Aeros in the latter stages of the 2002-03 season. Upon his arrival in Houston, Holmqvist went on to lead the Aeros to the 2003 Calder Cup title, while earning playoff MVP honours.

On the international scene, Holmqvist suited up for Sweden at the 2005 World Championship.

In the summer of 2006, Holmqvist was signed by the Tampa Bay Lightning. In Tampa, Holmqvist recorded a career high 27 wins and posted a respectable 2.85 G.A.A while he split the role between the pipes with Marc Denis. The following season Holmqvist posted a 20-16 record on a Lightning club that struggled to keep above .500. Just hours before the NHL trading deadline hit, Holmqvist was traded to the Dallas Stars with teammate Brad Richards for goalie Mike Smith, centre Jeff Halpern and winger Jussi Jokinen.
