Matthew Yeats was born April 6, 1979 in Innisfail, Alberta. The ninth round, 248th overall selection of the Los Angeles Kings in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Yeats is a graduate of the University of Maine.

In his three years at the University of Maine, Yeats had an impressive 44-23-11 record before he made his professional debut in 2002-03. Over the course of his first season as a pro, Yeats spent the majority of his season with the ECHLs Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies while playing a couple of games with the AHLs Philadelphia Phantoms.

In the summer of 2003, Yeats joined the Washington Capitals organization and spent the majority of the season with the teams AHL affiliate in Portland before making his NHL debut with the Caps in the latter stages of the season.
