Nolan Yonkman was born April 1, 1981 in Punnicht, Saskatchewan. The 2nd round, 37th overall selection of the Washington Capitals in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Yonkman is a graduate of the Western Hockey League.

The defenseman from Punnicht, Saskatchewan played four seasons in the WHL with stops in Kelowna and Brandon and was a member of Team Saskatchewan at the 1997 National Under-17 Tournament.

A member of Team Orr at the 1999 CHL Top Prospects Game, Yonkman is a physical player who has good presence in the defensive zone. Not known as an offensive threat, Yonkman had a career high 17 points (6-11-17) in 58 games shared between Kelowna and Brandon in 2001-02.

Yonkman made his NHL debut with the Caps during the 2001-02 season, while spending the majority of the year with the team's AHL affiliate in Portland. Over the course of the next two seasons, Yonkman continued to hone his skills in the AHL with Portland, however he would miss the majority of the 2003-04 season recovering from injury.

In the summer of 2006, Yonkman was signed as a free agent by the Nashville Predators, but he would be assigned to the club's AHL affiliate in Milwaukee.

On July 3, 2010, Yonkman was signed as a free agent by the Phoenix Coyotes. He would appear in 16 games for the club, recording an assist and 39 minutes in penalties.

On July 1, 2011, Yonkman was on the move again. This time he inked a deal with the Florida Panthers.
