Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Martin Grenier
Martin Grenier was born November 2, 1980 in Laval, Quebec. The 2nd round, 45th overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Grenier is a graduate of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

A tough competitor, Grenier is a defensive minded blueliner who plays aggressive and uses his size to his advantage.

The hulking defenseman from Laval, Quebec played four seasons in the QMJHL, three full seasons with the Quebec Remparts before being dealt midway through his fourth season to the Victoriaville Tigres.

In 1998-99, Grenier led all QMJHL players with a remarkable 479 PIM in 60 games with the Remparts before enjoying his finest offensive out-put in 2000-01, ranking 13th among QMJHL defensemen in scoring with 14 goals and 35 assists for 49 points while spending 190 minutes in the penalty box. Grenier's 14 goals and 49 points were both career highs and he was a plus-33 for the season.

Averaging 9-25-34 and 293 PIM throughout his four year QMJHL career, Grenier would never get the opportunity of playing for the Colorado organization after he was traded to the Boston Bruins midway through the 1999-2000 season in a deal that saw Raymond Bourque join the Avalanche.

Grenier would only be in the Bruins system for a little more than a year before signing as a free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2001.

In his first season of professional hockey in 2001-02, Grenier spent the majority of the season with the Coyotes AHL affiliate in Springfield where he led all players with 241 PIM while only playing in a handful of games with Phoenix. Grenier again spent most of the 2002-03 season with Springfield of the AHL, leading his team in penalty minutes and earning a brief three game stint with the parent club.

After two seasons with the Phoenix organization, Grenier was acquired by the Vancouver Canucks prior to the 2003-04 season. Upon his arrival with the Canuck organization, Grenier spent the better part of the season with the AHL's Manitoba Moose while playing a handful of games with the parent club before subsequently being dealt to the New York Rangers at the trading deadline for forward Martin Rucinsky.

Grenier spent the next two seasons toiling in the minors before being signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 2006.
