Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Doug Janik
Doug Janik was born March 26, 1980 in Agawam, Massachusetts. The second round, 55th overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Janik is a graduate of Hockey East's University of Maine Black Bears.

A two-time member of the United States World Junior Team (1999-2000), the Agawam, Massachusetts native spent three seasons with the Black Bears capturing an NCAA National Championship in 1999 as a Fresheman and was a 2000-01 NCAA All-East Regional Team member before making his professional debut in 2001-02.

Following a three year career at the University of Maine, Janik made the jump to professional hockey after his Junior year and became in integral part of the AHL's Rochester Americans blue line. The team's Rookie-of-the-Year, Most Improved Player and Unsung Hero, Janik finished his rookie campaign with six goals and 17 assists for 23 points.

Over the course of the next two seasons, Janik spent the majority of his time in Rochester while seeing limited action with the parent club in Buffalo.

After three years with the Buffalo Sabres organization the free agent defenceman signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer of 2006. He went on to appear in his first full NHL season with Tampa after he earned a roster spot during training camp. However, the Lightning struggled that season and drastic changes were made in the off-season in an attempt to rebuild the franchise.

After playing parts of the 2008-09 season with the Dallas Stars and their American Hockey League affiliate the Rockford IceHogs, Janik was traded to the Montreal Canadiens on February 26, 2009 in exchange for gritty winger Steve Begin.

In the summer of 2009, Janik signed on with the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent.
