Peter Smrek was born February 16, 1979 in Martin, Slovak. The third round, 85th overall selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Smrek came to North America in 1998-99 and joined the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers.

After one season in Des Moines, Smrek made his pro debut in 1999-00 with the ECHL's Peoria Rivermen. The Martin, Slovak native played a handful of games with the Rivermen before joining the AHL's Worcester IceCats for the remainder of the season. In 2000-01, Smrek saw action with four different teams. After splitting the early part of the season with St. Louis and Worcester, the Slovak defenceman was dealt to the New York Rangers where he played in 14 games before joining the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford for the post season. Smrek spent one more season in the Ranger ogranization before joining the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals in the latter stages of the 2001-02 season.

In 2002-03, Smrek was still a member of the Admirals.
