Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Alex Auld
Alex Auld was born January 7, 1981 in Cold Lake, Alberta. The 2nd choice, 40th overall selection of the Florida Panthers in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Auld is a graduate of the Ontario Hockey League's North Bay Centennials.

Selected to the OHL's Second All-Rookie Team in 1997-98 and named the Most Improved Player in the OHL's Eastern Conference in 1998-99, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native was a member of Canada's 2001 World Junior team, before making his professional debut in 2001-02.

Auld went on to split his first season of professional hockey with the ECHL's Columbia Inferno and the AHL's Manitoba Moose before making his NHL debut with the Canucks. Over the course of the next two seasons, Auld saw the majority of his on ice action with the Manitoba Moose, while seeing limited action with the Vancouver.

In the summer of 2006, Auld was involved in a blockbuster trade that sent the goaltender alongside Todd Bertuzzi to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Bryan Allen, Robert Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and Florida's 6th round choice in the 2006 Entry Draft. Auld went on to compete in a single season with the Panthers, splitting his time with veteran netminder Ed Belfour. Auld posted a 7-13-5 record on a struggling Florida Panther club that opted not to re-sign him in the off-season. After only one year in Florida Auld found himself on the move again, signing as a free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Auld signed a one-year contract with the Coyotoes in August, 2007 and went on to split the starting role with David Aebischer and Mikael Tellqvist. The club carried three goaltedners at one point but eventaully waived Aebischer and assinged him to the minors. Auld went on to post a losing record in Phoenix and was dealt by the club on December 6, 2007 to the Boston Bruins.

In Boston, Auld went 9-7 and backed up the B's starting netminder Tim Thomas on most nights. His time in Boston lasted only a single season however, after the club was eliminated in the NHL playoffs Auld became a free agent on July 1 and opted to sign as an unrestricted free agent with the Ottawa Senators.

On July 8, 2009, Auld was sent from Ottawa to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a sixth round draft pick, though he would not spend much time in Dallas. In February of 2010, after appearing in just 21 games, he was waived by the Stars and claimed by the New York where he would finish the season.

On July 1, 2010, Auld signed with the Montreal Canadiens as an unrestricted free agent. After just one year in Montreal, a year in which he appeared in 16 games and put up a solid goals-against-average of 2.64, Auld was on the move again. On July 1, 2011, he inked a one-year deal with the Ottawa Senators.
