Robert Zepp was born on September 7, 1981 in Newmarket, Ontario. He played his junior hockey for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. Zepp was awarded the Dave Pinkney Trophy, as part of the goaltending duo with the lowest goals-against-average, in each of his three years with the Whalers . In his first season with the club, Zepp was also awarded the Bobby Smith Trophy as the OHL Scholastic Player of the Year who best combines high standards of play and academic excellence and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award.

Zepp was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the fourth round of the 1999 NHL NHL Entry Draft. Unable to come to terms, he re-entered the draft and was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round of the 2001 draft.

He would go on to play for the Florida Everblades of the ECHL from 2001 until 2005 before deciding to play in Europe. He joined SaiPa of the Finnish SM-liiga for two seasons and then Eisbären Berlin in 2007.

On July 1, 2014, Zepp returned to North America by inking a one-year deal with with the Philadelphia Flyers. He made his NHL debut on December 21 against the Winnipeg Jets at the age of 33. Zepp made 25 saves on 28 shots to lead the Flyers to a 4–3 overtime victory. He would go on to appear in 10 games for the Flyers during the 2014-15 season, posting a solid 2.89 goals-against-average.
