Branislav Mezei was born October 8, 1980 in Nitra, Czech Republic. The first round, tenth overall selection of the New York Islanders in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Mezei is a graduate of the OHL's Belleville Bulls.

In 171 games with Belleville, the hulking defenceman registered 59 points (15-44-59) with 247 PIM. A First Team OHL All-Star in 2000, Mezei played for Slovakia at the 1999 and 2000 World Junior Championships before making his professional debut in 2000-01. In his first two professional seasons, Mezei split his time between the Islanders and the team's AHL affiliate in Lowell (2000-01) and Bridgeport Sound (2001-02), helping them reach the 2002 Calder Cup final.

In the summer of 2002 the Islanders traded the young rearguard to the Florida Panthers. Upon his arrival in Florida, the Nitra native split his time between the Panthers and the team's AHL affiliate in San Antonio before becoming a regular with the Panthers in 2003-04.

Aside from his appearances at the World Juniors, Mezei has twice represented his homeland at the World Championships (2001, 2004) and was a member of Team Slovakia at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
