Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Kaspars Astashenko
Big defenseman Kaspars Astashenko was the Tampa Bay Lightning's fifth choice in the 1999 Entry Draft. The Latvian born defenseman caught the Lightning's attention the year before when he made his North American debut by splitting his season between the East Coast Hockey League's Dayton Bombers and the International Hockey League's Cincinnati Cyclones.

As a member of the Lightning's system in 1999-00 Astashenko spent time with the Detroit Vipers and the Long Beach Ice Dogs, both IHL clubs, but he also made his NHL debut.

Astashenko suited up for Tampa Bay eight times that season and managed to contribute one assist while adding four penalty minutes. The following year he joined the Lightning for 15 more contests and was able to score his first NHL goal and added another assist to his career totals. However, the bulk of his season was spent back with the Vipers.

The off-season acquisitions of defenseman Nolan Pratt and Grant Ledyard crowded the Tampa blue line and Astashenko found himself unable once again to crack the Lightning's roster out of training camp. With the IHL folded, he instead was assigned to Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League. In December of 2001 the Lightning traded Astashenko to the Carolina Hurricanes and he spent the rest of his campaign with their farm club.
