Martin Prusek was born December 11, 1975 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The 6th round choice, 164th overall selection of the Ottawa Senators in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Prusek spent seven years in the Czech Republic League with Vitkovice HC before making his North American debut in 2001-02.

The goaltender from Ostrava, Czech Republic led Vitkovice to the Czech Republic Extraleague Finals in 1996-97 after posting a 2.30 goals against average and 91.9 save percentage in 49 games during the regular season and played in a career high 50 games in 1999-2000 earning a 2.99 goals against average on a team that won only ten games all season.

Prusek spent the majority of the 2001-02 season with the Sens AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids while playing in one game with the parent club. Prusek had a short stint in Binghamton of the AHL in 2002-03, but after only four games joined the Senators to become the full time backup behind Patrick Lalime. In 18 games with the Senators, Prusek finished with a 12-2-1 record and followed it up with a 16-6-3 record in 2003-04 before being acquired by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2005.
