Alexander was born January 30, 1972 in Moscow, Russia. As an undrafted 20-year old, Khavanov moved to the United States, playing first with the Birmingham Bulls and then with Raleigh Icecaps of the ECHL. He then moved back to Russia and spent three seasons with St. Petersburg, two with Cherepovets and two seasons with Dynamo, wining the Russian championship in 1999-2000.

The big defenseman was drafted by St. Louis in the eighth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, and joined the Blues as a 27-year old rookie in 2000-01.

Upon his arrival with the Blues, Khavanov was a steady player on the club's blueline before being acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2005.

On the international stage, Khavanov represented his homeland at the World Championships (1999-2000, 2003) and the World Cup of Hockey (2004).
