Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Derrick Walser
Derrick Walser was born May 12, 1978 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. A graduate of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Beauport Harfangs and Rimouski Oceanic, Walser is an offensive minded defenseman who put can up big numbers.

In his final year of junior hockey with Rimouski in 1997-98, Walser scored 41 goals, 69 assists for 110 points leading all QMJHL defensemen, while capturing QMJHL and CHL Defenseman of the Year honours and was recognized as a QMJHL and CHL First Team All-Star.

After five strong seasons in the "Q", the Calgary Flames signed Walser as a free agent and he went on to split his first two years of professional hockey between the ECHL's Johnstown Chiefs and AHL's Saint-John Flames before earning his stay with Saint-John in 2000-01.

In his third season of professional hockey, the New Glasgow, Nova Scotia native finished fifth in the AHL among defensemen in points with 55 and played a key role in the Flames 2001 Calder Cup win.

Following a breakthrough season in 2000-01, the Columbus Blue Jackets signed Walser as a free agent and assigned him to their AHL affiliate in Syracuse where he led the team in scoring with 61 points and impressed the Blue Jackets brass enough to be called up and play two games with the parent club during the season. Over the course of the next two seasons, Walser continued to share his time between the Blue Jackets and the Syracuse Crunch.

Walsner's next two years of hockey would be spent in the German League where he competed with Eisbaren Berlin. In his first season with the Berlin club he would compete alongside Erik Cole of the Carolina Hurricanes. The two would help the club go on to win the league title that season before Cole returned to the Hurricanes in 2005-06.

In July of 2005, Walsner was acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes from the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, the defenceman would spend the 2005-06 season with the Eisbaren Berlin yet again and go on to win his second German League title. Returning to North America for his 2006-07 season, Walser was traded back to Columbus by Carolina in exchange for Mark Flood. He would see limited action in the Blue Jackets' line-up and spend most of his time with their AHL affiliate in Syracuse.

In the summer of 2007, the New Glasgow, Nova Scotia native signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
