Jeff MacMillan was born March 30, 1979 in Durham, Ontario. The seventh round, 125th overall selection of the Dallas Stars in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, MacMillan is a graduate of the OHLs Oshawa Generals.

A stay-at-home defenseman, MacMillan played three seasons with the Generals before making his professional debut in 99-2000 with stops in Michigan of the IHL and Fort Wayne of the UHL. In 2001-02 MacMillan joined the Utah Grizzlies and spent the better part of four seasons patrolling the blue line before making his NHL debut with Dallas during the 2003-04 season.

In the summer of 2005, MacMillan was acquired by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
