Kurt Sauer was born January 16, 1981 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The third round, 88th overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Sauer is a graduate of the Western Hockey League's Spokane Chiefs.

A hulking defenceman with an offensive upside, Sauer played three seasons with Spokane before making his professional debut in 2002-03 with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Although he was originally drafted by Colorado, both parties we're unable to reach a contract agreement and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks eventually signed the St. Cloud, Minnesota native as a free agent.

The former WHL First Team All-Star was a solid performer on the Mighty Ducks blue line in 2002-03, suiting up for 80 of the teams 82 games and was just as impressive in the team's run to the Stanley Cup final. In 2003-04, Sauer returned for his second season with the club, and played the better part of the season in Anaheim before being acquired the team that drafted him back in 2000, the Colorado Avalanche. As a member of the Avalanche, Sauer through his weight around and contributed offensively from time to time over two seasons.

In his last season in Colorado, he suited up in 54 games and helped the Avalanche return to the NHL playoffs in a highly competitive Western Conference. After the Avalanche were eliminated from the second round of the playoffs, Sauer was left unsigned in the off-season and he opted to sign with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Traded to Colorado by Anaheim with Anaheim's 4th round pick (Raymond Macias) in 2005 NHL Draft for Martin Skoula, February 21, 2004. Signed as a free agent by Phoenix, July 1, 2008. Missed majority of 2009-10 and entire 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons due to upper body injury.
