Petteri Nummelin was born November 25, 1972 in Turku, Finland. The fifth round, 133rd overall selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Nummelin spent the early part of his playing career in Europe before making his North American and NHL debut in 2000-01.

The Turku native played three seasons with the hometown TPS Turku in the Finnish Elite League before joining Vastra Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League in 1995-96. An offenisvely gifted player, Nummelin reached the 20-goal plateau with Vastra in 1996-97 before deciding to take his game to Davos of the Swiss National League the following year. Nummelin went on to play three seasons in Davos and nine seasons in Europoe before the Blue Jackets selected him in the 2000 draft.

Upon his arrival in Columbus, Nummelin saw action in 61 games with the NHL club, scoring four goals and 12 assists for 16 points, before opting to return overseas and to the Swiss National League the following year.

Following his stint in the Swiss league, Nummelin was traded to Minnesota in in the summer of 2006.

On the international stage, Nummelin has represented his homeland eleven times at the World Championships (1995-2005), and once at the Winter Olympics (2006) and was a member of its World Cup team in 1996.

Rights traded to Minnesota by Atlanta for Edmonton's 3rd round pick (previously acquired, Atlanta selected Spencer Machacek) in 2007 NHL Draft, June 14, 2006. Missed majority of 2007-08 season due to a recurring head/neck injury and serving as a healthy reserve.
