Brian Eklund was born May 24, 1980 in Braintree, Massachusetts. The seventh round, 226th overall selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Eklund is a graduate of the ECAC's Brown Bears.

In his four years at Brown, Eklund posted a 7-27-4 record along with one shutout before going on to make his professional debut in 2002-03. In his rookie season in the pros, the Braintree, MA native spent the majority of the season with the ECHL's Pensacola Ice Pilots while seeing action in one game with the AHLs Springfield Falcons.

After being limited to a mere 19 games in 2002-03, Eklund suited up for 62 games the following year and finished the season with an impressive 38-17-7 record. In 2004-05, Eklund was promoted to the AHL and the Springfield Flacons. Over the course of the next two seasons Eklund saw most of his action with Springfield before making his NHL debut with Tampa Bay during the 2005-06 season.

Midway through the 2005-06 season Eklund was dealt to the Boston Bruins.
