Lawrence Nycholat was born May 7, 1979 in Calgary, Alberta. A graduate of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos, Nycholat appeared in 280 games with the club registering 209 points (59-150-209), along with 407 penalty minutes.

An offensive-minded defenseman, Nycholat signed as a free-agent with the Minnesota Wild in March in the summer of 2000. Coming off a strong junior career, the Calgary, Alberta native split his first season as a professional with the ECHL's Jackson Bandits and the IHL's Cleveland Lumberjacks. In 2001-02, Nycholat joined the AHL's Houston Aeros before splitting the following year between Houston and Hartford of the AHL after being acquired by the New York Rangers in March of 2003.

During his first full season with the Rangers organization, Nycholat spent the majority of the year with Hartford while making his NHL debut with New York shortly after the Christmas Holidays in 2004. The former WHLer went on to play one more seasons in the Ranger organization before being acquired by the Washington Capitals in the summer of 2005.

Nycholat spent the 2005-06 season with the Capitals' AHL affiliate in Hershey. That season Nycholat was an integral member of the club's run to the Calder Cup championship. The following seasons Nycholat would see action in 18 games with the Capitals before being dealt to the Ottawa Senators at the NHL trading deadline. He spent his entire 2007-08 season with the Ottawa Senators organization, and despite notching 49 points in 77 games
