Mark Popovic was born October 11, 1982 in Stoney Creek, Ontario. The 35th overall selection of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Popovic is a graduate of the OHLs St. Michaels Majors.

Over four seasons with the Toronto St.Michael's Majors, Popovic collected 155 points (36 goals, 119 assists) in 247 games and was twice named the clubs most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Denfenceman.

Popovic made a strong start in his first professional season with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, notching 24 points while leading the club with a plus-eight rating. A season later he made his NHL debut in a January 2, 2003 game between the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Buffalo Sabres, however he returned to Cincinnati shortly after.

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks dealt Popovic to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Kip Brennan on August 23, 2005. Over the course of his next two seasons he would spend the majorty of his time with the Thrashers' AHL affilaite in Chicago.
