Doug Lynch was born April 4, 1983 in North Vancouver, British Columbia. The second choice, 43rd overall selection of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Lynch is a graduate of the WHL.

An offensively gifted defenseman, Lynch played four full seasons in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels and the Spokane Chiefs, capturing a Memorial Cup title with the Rebels in 2000-01.

In 2003-04, Lynch spent the better part of the season with the AHLs Toronto Roadrunners while seeing his first NHL action with the Oilers.
