Mikko Koivu was born March 12, 1983 in Turku, Finland. The first round, sixth overall selection of the Minnesota Wild in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Koivu, who is the younger brother NHLer Saku, honed his skills in his homeland with TPS Turku's Junior and Senior teams before making his North American debut in 2004-05.

A member of Finland's silver medal winning team at the 2001 WJC, Koivu first season in North America was with Minnesota's AHL affiliate in Houston where he registered 48 points (20-28-48) while representing the club at the 2005 AHL All-Star Game.

On October 20, 1009, Koivu was named the first permanent captain in Minnesota Wild history.

In 2005-06, Koivu made his NHL debut with the Wild and once the NHL season came to an end helped Finland capture a bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships.

Aside from his World Junior and World Championship experience, the Turku, Finland native represented his homeland at the Under 18 World Championships (2000-2001) and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Koivu also represented Finland in four World Championships (2006-2008, 2011) where he helped Finalnd win two Bronze Medals (2006, 2008), one Silver Medal (2007) and one Gold Medal (2011).

During the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Koivu captained Team Finland to a Bronze Medal finish.
