Travis Roche was born June 17, 1978 in Grand Cache, Alberta. An offensively gifted defenceman, Roche played two seasons at the University of North Dakota where he helped the Fighting Sioux capture a National title in 2000. In his two seasons at UND Roche was the recipient of individual honours including; NCAA West First Team All-American (2001) and NCAA Frozen Four All-Tournament Team(2000).

After two seasons at UND, the Minnesota Wild signed the undrafted free agent in the spring of 2001. Upon signing with the Wild, Roche went on to make his NHL debut with the club later that spring and joined their AHL affiliate in Houston for the better part of the 2001-02 season. In his first pro season, the Grand Cache native finished with 34 points (13G-21A)in 60 games while playing a handful of games with the parent club in Minnesota.

Roche returned to Houston in 2002-03 establishing career highs in goals (14), assists (34) and points (48) and was a key player in the team's run to the 2003 Calder Cup title. In 2003-04, Roche spent the majority of season in the AHL while playing a handful of games with the Wild before being acquired by the Atlanta Thrashers in the summer of 2004.

As a member of the Thrashers, Roche was sent to compete with the club's AHL team in Chicago for two seasons before being signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2006
