Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ryan Whitney
Ryan Whitney was born February 19, 1983 in Boston, MA. The first round, fifth overall selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Whitney is a graduate of Boston University.

An offensive defenseman, Whitney played three seasons at BU before opting to forego his senior year in order to turn professional. A two-time member of the United States World Junior team (2002-2003), Whitney made his professional debut with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the spring of 2004 before playing his first full season with the club in 2004-05.

After an impressive season in 2004-05 in which Whitney registered 41 points (6-35-41), the former BU rearguard made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh in 2005-06.

Battling through injuries throughout the 2008-09 season, Whitney managed to appear in only 28 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins before being traded to Anaheim at the trade deadline in exchange for Chris Kunitz.

On March 3, 2010, Whitney was again traded at the deadline. This time to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Lubomir Visnovsky.

In February of 2010, Whitney was part of the US Olympic team that brought home the silver medal in a thrilling overtime final at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
