Keith Ballard was born November 26, 1982 in Beaudette, Minnesota. The first round, eleventh overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Ballard is a graduate of the WCHA's Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Prior to joining the Golden Gophers, Ballard was a member of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and a member of the USHL's Omaha Lancers. An offensive minded defenseman, Ballard played three seasons at Minnesota (2001-2004) registering 100 points (33-67-100) while capturing numerous individual honours, including; NCAA West First All-American Team (2003-04), WCHA First All-Star Team (2002-03 and 2003-04) and helped Minnesota capture back to back NCAA titles in 2002-2003.

Ballard made his professional debut with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies in 2004-05 registering 20 points (2-18-20) while suiting up for PlanetUSA at the 2005 AHL All-Star Game. In 2005-06, the former Golden Gopher made his NHL debut with the Coyotes and was an imposing presence on the club's blue line, registering 39 points (8-31-39).

Internationally, Ballard has represented USA at the 2004, 2007 and 2008 World Championships and the 2002 World Junior Championships.

On June 25, 2010, Ballard was traded from the Panthers along with Victor Oreskovich in exchange for forwards Steve Bernier, Michael Grabner and a first round draft pick.

Traded to Florida by Phoenix with Nick Boynton and Ottawa's 2nd round pick (previously acquired, later traded back to Phoenix - Phoenix selected Jared Staal) in 2008 NHL Draft for Olli Jokinen, June 20, 2008.
