Aaron Rome was born on September 27, 1983 in Besbitt, Manitoba. The fourth round, 104 overall selection of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft is a graduate of the Western Hockey League.

Before making his professional hockey debut with Cincinnati, Rome spent parts of six seasons in the WHL with Saskaton, Kootenay, Swift Current and Moose Jaw. In his final season in the WHL, Rome ranked third among defencemen in scoring with 52 points while splitting his season with Swift Current and Moose Jaw.

Rome's debut with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks came in 2004-05 when he appeared in 76 games with the club. The following season Rome joined the Portland Pirates blueline and spent the entire season with the club. In 2006-07, Rome competed in 76 games with the Pirates before being called up to appear in his first game with the Anaheim Ducks. He would also see action in a single playoff game in the Ducks post-season run to the Stanley Cup.

On November 15, 2007 Rome's stint with the Anaheim Ducks came to an end. He was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Clay Wilson for Geoff Platt. He would split the next several seasons between the AHL and NHL, seeing action in 17 games for the Blue Jackets in 2007-08.

In the summer of 2009, as an unrestricted free agent, Rome inked a deal with the Vancouver Canucks. Over the next three seasons he would appear in 148 games for the Canucks, providing steady defensive play.

On July 1, 2012, Rome's time in Vancouver would come to an end. He signed a three-year deal worth an annual salary of $1.5 million with the Dallas Stars.
