Matt Jones was born August 8, 1983 in Downers Grove, Illinois. The third round, 80th overall selection of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Jones is a graduate of the USHLs Green Bay Gamblers.

A solid defenseman, Jones played two seasons with Green Bay before moving on to the University of North Dakota in the fall of 2001. Over the course of the next four years, Jones was a key player on the clubs blue line, registering 52 points (16-36-52) while capturing All-WCHA Second Team (2004), All-WCHA Third Team (2005) honours and leading UND to the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four championship game, only to fall short against the University of Denver.

Following his collegiate career Jones suited up for the AHL's San Antonio Rampage in 2005-06 and went on make his NHL debut with Phoenix later that season.

On the international stage, Jones was a member of the U.S. World Junior team in 2003.
