Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Joni Pitkanen
Joni Pitkanen was born September 19, 1983 in Oulu, Finland. The first round, fourth overall selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Pitkanen honed his skills in the Finnish Junior and Elite Leagues before making his North American debut in 2003-04.

A two-time member of Finland's World Junior Team (2002, 2003) Pitkanen was recognized by the IIHF as the tournament's best defenceman in 2003 and has also represented his homeland as a member of its Under-18 Team at the 2000 Five Nations Cup and its Under-17 Team at the 2000 World Hockey Challenge.

In 2003-04, the Finnish rearguard made his NHL debut with the Flyers and was a solid performer throughout the entire regular season, as well as the club's playoff run to the Eastern Conference Final. A member of the NHL's All-Rookie Team, Pitkanen registered 27 points (8-19-27).

Pitkanen became a regular in the Flyer line-up for the next few seasons and would establish a career high 43 points in 77 games in the 2006-07 season. Despite his success the Flyers struggled that season and opted to send Pitkanen to the Edmonton Oilers in the summer of 2007. With the Oilers, Pitkanen scored eight goals and earned 18 assists in 63 games to rank second among Edmonton defensemen in scoring. However, his stint in Edmonton came to an end in the summer of 2008 when the free agent signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
