Joe Callahan was born on December 20, 1982 in Brockton, Massachusetts. A draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes, Callahan played his collegiate hockey at the prestigious Yale University.

Following his NCAA career, Callahan joined the Coyotes' AHL affiliate in Springfield before signing with the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in the summer of 2007.

The following summer Callahan would join the New York Islanders, with whom he would make his NHL debut in 2008. In all he would appear in 18 games during the 2008-09 season.

On July 16, 2009, Callahan was signed by the San Jose Sharks to a one-year contract
