Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tom Gilbert
Tom Gilbert was born January 10, 1983 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Colorado's 5th choice, 129th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Gilbert is a graduate of the WCHA's University of Wisconsin Badgers.

Prior to attending the University of Wisconsin, Tom Gilbert played a full season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL. After his stint in Chicago, he made an immediate impact upon his arrival at the University of Wisconsin leading the team;s defensive corps in scoring. In his senior and junior years he was named the assistant captain of the club which won the NCAA National title in 2006.

Despite the fact that Gilbert he was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2002, he never played a single game for the club. At the time, the Avalanche needed help in goal and they opted to trade the young defenceman to Edmonton in exchange for Swedish netminder Tommy Salo.

In 2006-07 Gilbert made his professional hockey debut on his birthday (January 10, 1983) with the Edmonton organization and went on to split the season with the Oilers and their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

In his first year with the Olilers, Gilbert set a franchise record for rookie defenceman with 13 goals. Following his rookie season he reached a contract extension with the Oilers reported to be worth $24 million over six years.

Over the next three and a half seasons Gilbert provided the Oilers with steady offence from the back end, but never again reached the goal output of his rookie campaign.

On February 27, 2012, Gilbert's time in Edmonton would come to an end. He was traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Nick Schultz.

After two seasons with the Wild, the organization bought out his contract in order to save money under the salary cap. As a free agent he signed a one year contract with the Florida Panthers on September 28, 2013.

Gilbert spent a year in Florida and became an unrestricted free agent once again. He was rewarded by signing a two year contract with the Montreal Canadiens. After two solid seasons with the Canadiens, Gilbert was once again a free agent in the summer of 2016. On July 1 he inked a deal with the Los Angeles Kings. Gilbert would appear in just 18 games for the Kings during the 2016-17 season before he was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a conditional draft pick.
