Mike McKenna was born April 11, 1983 in St. Louis, Missouri, was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

While playing with the Las Vegas Wranglers in 2006-07, McKenna posted an impressive 27-4-2 record, with five shutouts. He was named to the All-Star team and finished second in the league voting for Most Valuable Player, and made his NHL debut in 2009 for the Lightning.

McKenna's professional career would be spent predominantly at the American Hockey League level and saw stops in Norfolk, Milwaukee, Omaha, Portland, Albany, Binghampton, Peoria and Springfield. Along the way, he also suited up for 15 for the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2008-09 season as well as four games for the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2013-14.

On On March 1, 2017, McKenna, was on the move again. This time traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Adam Wilcox. He would finish the season with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL and in the summer of 2017, as an unrestricted free agent, signed with the Dallas Stars.
