Paul Ranger was born September 12, 1984 in Whitby, Ontario. The sixth round, 183rd overall selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Ranger is a graduate of the OHLs Oshawa Generals.

A solid defenseman in his first two seasons with the Generals, Ranger broke out offensively in his final two seasons, registering seasons of 38 and 43 points respectively. After four seasons with Oshawa, the Whitby native made his professional debut with Springfield in 2004-05 and in 2005-06 was a mainstay on the Tampa Bay blue line.
