Nathan Oystrick was born on December 17, 1982 in Regina, Saskatchewan. The offensive defenseman played his collegiate hockey at the Northern Michigan University, compiling impressive numbers.

Though drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2002, Oystrick did not make his NHL debut until the 2008-09 season when he appeared in 50 games for the club.

On March 1, 2010, in the days leading up to the NHL trade deadline, Oystrick was shipped to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Evgeny Artyukhin.
