Matt Smaby was born October 14, 1984 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Lightning's second round, 41st overall selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Smaby is a graduate of the University of North Dakota.

A hard hitting defenseman, Smaby captained the University of North Dakota to two consecutive NCAA Frozen Four appearances. He capped off his three year stint at UND by registering a career high 19 points and made the leap to the pro ranks of hockey the following season with the AHL's Springfield Falcons. After a respectable 66-game season in Springfield, the Minneapolis, Minnesota native appeared in fourteen games with the Lightning throughout the 2008-09 season.
