David Liffiton was born October 18, 1984 in Windsor, Ontario. The second round, 63rd overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Liffition is a graduate of the OHL's Plymouth Whalers.

A solid defenseman, Liffiton went on to play three seasons in Plymouth registering 39 points (10-29-39), along with 289 penalty minutes. In the summer of 2004, the Windsor native saw his rights acquired by the New York Rangers and later that fall made his professional debut with the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers. Despite starting the 2004-05 season in Charlotte, Liffiton was quickly promoted to the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford and went on to spend the better part of the season in the AHL.

In 2005-06, Liffiton continued to hone his skills in the AHL, while seeing his first NHL action in the latter stages of the season.

Traded to NY Rangers by Colorado with Chris McAllister and Florida's 2nd round pick (previously acquired, later traded back to Florida - Florida selected David Shantz) in 2004 NHL Draft for Matthew Barnaby and NY Rangers' 3rd round pick (Denis Parshin) in 2004 NHL Draft, March 8, 2004. Missed majority of 2007-08 due to post-concussion syndrome. Signed as a free agent by New Jersey, September 29, 2009. Signed as a free agent by Colorado, July 2, 2010.
