Bruno Gervais was born October 3, 1984 in St Hyacinthe, Quebec. The sixth round, 182nd overall selection of the New York Islanders in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Gervais is a graduate of the QMJHL's Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

An offensive defenseman, Gervais played three seasons with Acadie-Bathurst registering 76 points (30-46-76) despite missing the better part of the 2003-04 season. Following his three year stint in QMJHL, Gervais made his professional debut in 2004-05 with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers before going on to make his NHL debut with the Islanders in 2005-06.

Gervais would become a mainstay on the Islanders' blueline between 2007 and 2011, providing the club with steady defensive play. On June 25, 2011, his time on Long Island would come to an end when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
