Doug O'Brien was born February 16, 1984 in St. Johns, Newfoundland. The sixth round, 192nd overall selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, OBrien is a graduate of the QMJHLs Hull/Gatineau Olympiques.

A solid defenseman, O'Brien went on to play four seasons in Hull/Gatineau registering 120 points (29-91-120) while leading his team to back-to-back QMJHL titles in 2003 and 2004. A two-time Memorial Cup finalist in 2003-2004, O'Brien went on to make his professional debut with the AHL's Springfield Falcons in 2004-05, while playing a handful of games with the ECHL's Johnstown Chiefs.

In 2005-06, O'Brien returned to Springfield and in January, 2006 went on to make his NHL debut with the Lightning. O'Brien returned to the Springfield Falcon line-up for 53 games of his 2006-07 season before being dealt by the Lightning to the Anaheim Ducks on February 27, 2007.
