Gerald Coleman was born April 3, 1985 in Romeoville, Illinois. The seventh round, 224th overall selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Coleman is a graduate of the OHL's London Knights.

A sound goaltender, Coleman played three seasons in London, posting an impressive 63-19-5 record along with 14 shutouts while leading the Knights to the 2005 Memorial Cup title. Prior to entering the OHL Coleman played in the USA Development Program and was the first player from the NHL Diversity Program to be drafted by a NHL team.

Following an impressive junior career Coleman made his professional debut with the AHL's Springfield Falcons while also seeing is first action in the NHL with Tampa Bay during the 2005-06 season.

Following his stint with the Lightning Coleman was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Defenceman Shane O'Brien.
