Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Al Montoya
Al Montoya was born on February 13, 1985 in Glenview, Illinois. He was drafted by the Rangers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft with the sixth overall pick, but with the emergence of star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Montoya was deemed expendable by the Rangers and he was shipped to Phoenix in February of 2008.

On April 1, 2009, Montoya made his NHL debut when the Coyotes took on the Colorado Avalanche and the young goaltender exceeded expectations, posting a shutout in a 3-0 victory. In doing so, Montoya bacame the first Cuban-American to play in the NHL.

Though he put up impressive numbers at the NHL level, he would be returned to San Antonio of the AHL, where he would spend the 2009-10 season.

In February of 2011, Montoya was traded to the New York Islanders, who had recently suffered a series of injuries to their goaltenders in exchange for a sixth round draft pick.

in the 2012 offseason, Montoya was signed to a one year contract with the Winnipeg Jets. After two seasons playing with the Jets, Montoya was signed by a two year contract by the Florida Panthers on July 1, 2014.

After two seasons in Florida, Montoya was once again a free agent. This time he signed with the Montreal Canadiens on July 1 and joined the club for the 2016-17 season.

On the international stage, Montoya has represented the United States four times. This is highlighted by a gold medal performance at the 2004 World Junior Championship and two appearances at the IIHF World Championship (2009, 2011).
