Dan Lacosta was born March 28, 1986 in Labrador City, Newfoundland. The third round, 93rd overall selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Lacosta honed his skills in the Ontario Hockey League.

A highly skilled goaltender, Lacosta's four year stint in the OHL came to an end after he posted a league-high 36-17-1 record in his final season with the Barrie Colts. In his first season of professional hockey, he split his time between the AHL and ECHL with the Syracuse Crunch and Dayton Bombers respectively. The following season, he made his NHL debut with the Columbus Blue Jackets and spent the majority of his time in the minors.
