Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Johan Franzen
Johan Franzen was born December 29, 1979 in Vetlanda, Sweden. The third round, 97th overall selection of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Franzen honed his skills with Linkopings of the SEL before making his North American and NHL debut during the 2005-06 season.

A member of Sweden's World Championship team in 2003 and 2004, Franzen enjoyed a breakthrough season with Linkopings that same season, tallying 30 points (12-18-30) in 49 games while leading the SEL with a +24.

In the fall of 2005, Franzen opted to make his NHL debut with Detroit and was instrumental in helping the Red Wings capture the Presidents' Trophy for finishing first overall during the regular season.

Despite a solid season, the Red Wings fell to the eighth seeded Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Following a disappointing post season, Franzen joined Team Sweden and would help them capture Gold at the 2006 World Championships in Latvia. After his second full season in Detroit, Franzen recorded a career high 27 goals and 38 points on a Red Wing club that dominated. His offensive contributions continued into the 2008 playoffs where Franzen's 13 goals were matched only by teammate Henrik Zetterberg for the league lead. He had four game-winning-goals through the playoffs, despite suffering a concussion, en route to his first Stanley Cup championship.

On the international stage, Franzen has represented his native Sweden four times. This is highlighted by three IIHF World Championships, including a Gold Medal win in 2006 and an appearance at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
