Derek Peltier was born on March 4, 1985, in Plymouth, Minnesota. Peltier played his junior hockey with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders of the USHL where he drew the attention of the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs would select Peltier 184th overall at the 2004 draft.

He spent the majority of the 2008-09 season with the Avalanche's AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters and received his first call-up to the NHL in March. In all, he appeared in 11 games in the NHL, failing to record a point.
